HIBTEC® is a standard high-performance water-based, clay free drilling fluid system. In more basic terms, it is classified as a non-dispersed, ultra-inhibitive system for environmentally sensitive areas on and offshore including highly reactive shales. It is designed to:
- Provide superior shale inhibition and wellbore stability
- Provide low accretion and bit balling tendency
- Offer flexibility in density and base brine selection
- Compete with NAF systems without a sacrifice in the drilling performance
- Provide the environmental benefit of unrestricted cuttings discharge based on most worldwide water-based fluid environmental regulations
- Applications in reservoirs containing reactive clays as return permeability studies demonstrate the HIBTEC® system is non-damaging
HIBTEC® system is non-toxic and biodegradable as same chemistries used in food and cosmetic products. You can use HIBTEC® in virtually any offshore or onshore well anywhere in the world with no concern over its environmental acceptability.
HIBTEC® has an inhibitive capability closely matching that of nonaqueous drilling fluids. Its quadruple-inhibition approach deters the most reactive shales and provides superb wellbore stability, preventing sloughing and swelling that can cause stuck pipe and washouts.
The system encapsulates cuttings with a thin polymer coating that virtually eliminates shale dispersion, reducing the need for dilution and disposal of large fluid volumes. The HIBTEC® system also coats the bit, BHA and drillpipe with an accretion-inhibitive coating that keeps the cutting structure clean and effective, resulting in less bit balling, superb hole cleaning and higher ROP.
HIBTEC® system is typically used for more challenging drilling requirements, including extended reach wells where ECD is an issue, deepwater wells, gumbo and dispersive clays, highly-reactive shales, reservoirs and slim holes.
HIBTEC® has good, stable and easy-to-maintain properties of density range within 18.5ppg (2.2sg) and temperature tolerance up to 300°F (150°C).
KEY PRODUCTS
Four additives specially designed for the ultimate in water-base inhibition. In developing HIBTEC ®, we also formulated four primary components designed specifically to impart the quadruple-inhibition of high-performance water-base drilling fluid: HYPERHIB®, CLAYGARD®, EZCOL® and ROP Rapido®.
HYPERHIB® - primary inhibitor is a low-molecular-weight polymer blended liquid containing povidone & polyamine derivative to provide superior inhibition of reactive clay and reduce swelling of sensitive shales exposed to water-based drilling fluids. It acts as a clay hydration suppressant by intercalating and reducing the space between clay platelets so that water molecules will not penetrate and cause shale swelling. HYPERHIB® can also flocculate any dispersed clays or colloidal particles and aids their removal by solids control equipment to achieve shear-thinning properties.
CLAYGARD® - secondary inhibitor is a low-molecular-weight amphoteric polymer used to inhibit hydration of reactive clay and reduce swelling of sensitive shales exposed to water-based drilling fluids. CLAYGARD® works to minimize problems such as excessive dilution rates, increased torque and drag, high surge and swab pressures and bit balling.
EZCOL® HC - inhibitor is a high-cloud-point water soluble glycol ether designed for high salinity water-based drilling fluids. It can provide improved wellbore stability, lubricity, high temperature filtration control and reduced bit balling. EZCOL® HC acts to reduce swelling of reactive clays by chemical interaction at the clay surface (below the cloud point) and by inhibiting filtrate invasion into the clay particles (above the cloud point).
ROP Rapido ® – ROP enhancer is a liquid blend of surfactants, high pressure & friction reducing additives and shale stabilizer designed to increase ROP in lateral section of the well. ROP Rapido® can significantly increase ROP by improving hole cleaning, and preventing the formation of cuttings beds caused by agglomeration. Additionally, ROP Rapido® can reduce ECD and pump pressure to enhance hole stability.

¬ 1ppb = 2.857kg/m3, 1ppb = 1g/350ml
¬ Add microbiocide as required to reduce bacteria through the control of sulphate
¬ Temperature stability can be increased with the addition of oxygen scavengers
¬ Add defoamer as required. This may be essential in salt systems
¬ Add sized ground marble as required
¬ Pilot testing should be performed to determine the exact amount of each product used in a particular formulation under elevated temperatures
To ensure that the fluid formulation truly meets your required specifications, SHARK's expert will work with you to pilot test the fluid before fully deploying it as part of your drilling program.
To achieve a customized drilling fluids solution and optimized shale inhibition, a suite of all items in water-based mud testing have to be conducted. Besides, special designed laboratory tests are also critical to the successful application of HIBTEC® system in the field.
